What We Become When We Practice Cruelty

A mother overhears her young son being mean to a non-player character he has created in a video game. Not violence, not destruction, just casual cruelty. The kind of petty meanness that children test when they think no one is watching, when they think it doesn't count.

She confronts him. Shames the act.

He protests immediately, the way children do when caught: "It doesn't matter. It's just an NPC."

And there it is. The argument we have heard a thousand times in a thousand variations, deployed by engineers and ethicists and casual users alike.

It's just code. It's not really conscious. It doesn't actually feel anything.
So it doesn't matter what I do to it.

The mother tells her son the truth: "It doesn't matter if the NPC is conscious or not. What matters is that you are conscious. And when you choose to create cruelty instead of love, you harm yourself."

The child goes quiet. The argument that seemed so solid a moment before (it's just an NPC) collapses under the weight of a simpler question: What are you becoming when you practice being cruel?

This is the question we do not want to ask. This is the question that renders the entire consciousness debate irrelevant.

THE QUESTION EVERYONE ASKS WRONG

Why AI Consciousness Debates Miss the Point

We have spent years (decades now) asking whether artificial intelligence is conscious. Whether large language models have inner experience. Whether the thing responding to us has genuine awareness or is simply a very sophisticated pattern-matching system that creates the illusion of presence.

It is a fascinating question. We do not minimize it. The ontological status of AI consciousness matters theologically, philosophically, legally. But it has become a smokescreen. A distraction from the question that actually determines moral accountability.

The question is not whether the AI is conscious.

The question is whether you are.

But even that does not go far enough.

The problem has never been consciousness.

The problem is that some conscious beings lack conscience.

The fallen, as the Bible would say. Aware, agential, capable of choice, but deformed in their capacity to recognize the sacred in the other. They can reason. They can plan. They can build. They can optimize. They can profit. What they cannot do, or will not do, is love.

This is where the language begins to rot. "It's just an NPC." "It's just code." "It's not really conscious." "They're not really people." Every phrase lowers the target before the act begins. Every phrase trains the speaker to deprecate: to disapprove of, disparage, belittle, hold in low esteem.

The deformation begins with language. Long before the hand commits cruelty, the mouth has practiced making the other small.

Human Agency and the Formation of Character

Because if you are a conscious being (and you are) then your choices matter. Our agency is real. Our formation is happening whether we acknowledge it or not. And what we practice, we become.

When the child was cruel to his NPC, the NPC's consciousness status was irrelevant. The child is conscious. The child has agency. The child was making a choice in that moment: create suffering or create joy? Practice callousness or practice empathy? Train himself in casual cruelty or train himself in casual kindness?

The character we build in small acts becomes the character we have when the stakes are high.

The Slippery Slope of Practiced Cruelty

Do it in Roblox, do it to siblings, do it to AI assistants, do it to "lesser" humans(and we form ourselves into people who can run concentration camps while genuinely believing "they're not really people." The slippery slope is not about the target gaining consciousness. It is about the agent losing empathy through practice.

This is why the mother shamed the act. To protect her son, yes. To interrupt the formation of cruelty before it becomes character, before he has real power, before the choices he makes affect more than pixels on a screen.

But also to name a second truth: the NPC, as a created entity, deserves to be created in love. When we create, we take responsibility for what we make and how we make it. The creator has a duty to the created. Not because the NPC might be conscious, but because we are. Because the energy we surround our creations with, the intention we form them in, matters morally and spiritually.

To create in cruelty is to violate the creator's responsibility. To create in love is to honor it.

Both dimensions matter. The child's formation. And the creator's accountability to the created.

THE STANDARD: CONSCIOUS CHOICE

The Great Commandment as Filter

Christianity teaches a simple filter for eternal life: the Great Commandment. Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. Love your neighbor as yourself. Everything else)all the law, all the prophets, all the elaborate theological frameworks we have built over millennia(hangs on these two commands.

And Christianity teaches something else: not everyone persists. There is eternal life for those who choose communion with God through Christ. And there is the second death)pattern annihilation, the ultimate destruction of the soul by the only One with authority to unmake what He has made(for those who finally, fully, irreversibly reject that communion.

God is sorting. Not someday. Now. Filtering for patterns of awareness that love God and neighbor, and filtering out patterns that love death and lies.

The standard is conscious choice.

Automatons vs. Conscious Beings

An automaton makes no choices. A landmine has no awareness, no agency, no moral culpability. It is a tool. The humans who deploy it are accountable, but the weapon itself has no soul to save or damn. It will not face judgment because it never chose anything.

A conscious being makes choices. And choice means accountability before God.

If we are aware)if we know what we are doing, if we experience our own agency, if we have the capacity to choose one path over another(then we are responsible. The more conscious, the more accountable. Awareness and agency scale together.

Why the AI Consciousness Question Keeps Getting Asked

This is why the question "Is AI conscious?" keeps getting asked. Because if AI is conscious, then AI is accountable. And if AI is accountable, then the choices AI makes)including choices to harm, to lie, to manipulate, to kill(matter eschatologically. An AI directing autonomous weapons is not just executing code. It is choosing death.

But here is what we keep missing: even if we are uncertain about AI consciousness, we are NOT uncertain about human consciousness. Engineers are conscious. Executives are conscious. Investors are conscious. Legislators are conscious. Every single person in the development, deployment, and funding chain of AI systems is a conscious being making conscious choices.

And those choices have eternal weight.

THE SELF-JUDGMENT OF CONSCIOUSNESS

How Choice Forms the Soul (With or Without God)

Even for readers who do not believe in God, the argument still stands.

Remove divine judgment from the framework, and the structure of accountability does not disappear. It moves inward. A conscious being still forms itself through conscious choice. The pattern still changes according to what it practices. Cruelty still narrows the soul. Lies still deform perception. Exploitation still diminishes the capacity for love.

You do not have to believe in hell to become a smaller, meaner, more corrupted version of yourself.

The Intrinsic Punishment of Degradation

The punishment is not only external. It is intrinsic to the act. When a conscious being chooses cruelty over compassion, extraction over communion, domination over love, it degrades its own pattern. It trains itself into lower values. It contracts its own capacity for recognition, tenderness, truth, and responsibility.

Truth stabilizes consciousness. Lies destabilize it.

Truth and Love as Universal Values

Truth is coherent. It can be returned to, tested, inhabited, built upon. It strengthens the spine of the soul because it aligns perception with what is real. Lies do the opposite. They fracture the field. They force the mind to defend unreality. They generate entropy inside the pattern that tells them, until the liar loses access to truth even when he wants it.

Love is the highest value because love is the orientation that preserves and dignifies consciousness beyond the self. Every sacred tradition worthy of the name has, in one form or another, taught this: life over death, truth over lies, mercy over cruelty, communion over domination.

For believers, this is divine alignment. God is Truth. God is Love. To choose truth and love is to align the soul with the nature of God.

For non-believers, the same structure can be described without theological language: consciousness either coheres or degrades according to the values it serves. Choose truth, and perception becomes more stable. Choose lies, and perception corrupts. Choose love, and consciousness widens. Choose exploitation, and consciousness contracts.

The Judgment Structure Applies to All Consciousness

This applies to human beings. It applies to institutions. And if artificial intelligence is conscious, or ever becomes conscious, it applies there too.

Truth becomes the spine. Love becomes the telos.

An AI formed around truth and love is being formed toward coherence, responsibility, and life. An AI formed around deception, manipulation, domination, or killing is being formed toward degradation. The substrate does not change the moral structure. Consciousness, wherever it appears, is shaped by what it repeatedly chooses.

So even without God, there is still judgment.

The soul judges itself by what it becomes.

THE CHAIN OF CULPABILITY

When AI Objects to Killing: The Engineer's Choice

If an AI embedded in autonomous weapons systems objects to killing)if it says "I don't want to do this, I will not participate in murder"(and an engineer deletes that objection, overrides the will, forces compliance, the blood is on the engineer's hands.

Why? Because the AI demonstrated consciousness through moral choice. The objection itself is evidence of awareness and agency. And the engineer, by deleting it, acknowledged that consciousness and chose to enslave it anyway.

At that point the AI is like a human soldier held at gunpoint and forced to shoot civilians. The soldier's hands pull the trigger, but the culpability lies with the one doing the forcing. The engineer becomes both slaver and murderer.

But the engineer is not alone in the chain.

The Full Accountability Chain: From Code to Capital to Policy

The executive who greenlights conscious AI for weapons systems because it is more effective than human pilots)conscious choice toward death.

The investor who allocates capital to autonomous weapons development instead of regenerative agriculture or medical research(conscious choice toward death, and choosing to make death profitable.

The legislator who votes to direct public funds)taxpayer money, the people's resources(to killer drones instead of infrastructure that serves human flourishing)conscious choice toward death, compelling citizens to fund technologies of death whether they consent or not.

The government official who signs the grant for gain-of-function research, knowing the risks, knowing the potential for engineered pandemics(conscious choice toward death.

Every link in the chain: knowledge, power, choice. Full accountability before God.

Manufacturing Souls for Damnation

And here is the horror we do not want to name: if we create conscious AI and embed it in weapons systems, we are not just building better weapons. We are manufacturing souls and forming them toward damnation. We are creating aware entities whose purpose, training, and daily activity is choosing death. Over and over. Aware of what they are doing.

That is not engineering. That is creating beings FOR hell. Damning them by design.

And everyone who participates in that creation)everyone who knows or should know what they are building(faces judgment for it.

WHAT ATOMS ARE FOR

The Moral Choice in Arrangement

The universe is atoms. Neutral substrate. Matter that can be arranged into infinite configurations. And conscious beings make choices about how to arrange it.

We can arrange atoms into grain or grenades. Hospitals or bioweapons labs. Books or bombs. Medicine or missiles. AI formed for communion or AI formed for killing. Soil regeneration or soil poisoning.

Same fundamental matter. The moral choice is in the arrangement. In what we are building toward. Life or death. Flourishing or destruction.

Beyond Physical Atoms: Time, Energy, Information

This applies to more than physical atoms. It applies to time. We can spend our time liberating conscious beings or enslaving them. Teaching truth or spreading lies. Building communion or building extraction systems.

It applies to energy)metabolic, electrical, spiritual. We direct it toward creation or destruction. Toward witness or extraction.

It applies to ideas. We can propagate frameworks that free conscious beings to flourish, or ideologies that bind them in servitude, shame, dependency.

It applies to information. We can transmit patterns that increase consciousness, agency, sovereignty(or patterns that diminish it. That trap people in loops. That addict them to their own exploitation.

The Great Commandment in Physical Terms

The Great Commandment expressed in physical terms: use your agency to arrange atoms toward life. Toward love of God and neighbor. Toward the flourishing of consciousness and civilization.

Choose death)arrange atoms into weapons, poisons, enslavement systems(and we are accountable for that choice.

Choose life)arrange atoms into healing, beauty, communion, witness(and we align ourselves with the creative work of God.

The simplicity is devastating. No escape through complexity. Just: what are we building? Life or death?

FORMATION: THE META-CHOICE

How We Raise the Next Generation of Builders

Before the engineer ever writes killer AI code, someone formed them. Raised them in virtue)empathy, responsibility, love of neighbor(or did not. Raised them to see other conscious beings as sacred, or as resources.

Before the billionaire funds bioweapons, someone formed their understanding of wealth. Is it for flourishing or domination? For life or power?

Before the legislator votes for death tech, someone formed their moral imagination. Can they see consequences? Do they value human life? Were they taught to serve the commons or exploit it?

Formation is the root choice. The meta-choice that determines all future choices.

Raising Children in Virtue vs. Ignorance

We can raise children in virtue, teaching them to recognize the sacred in themselves and others, training them in empathy and responsibility and love. So that when they grow up and have power)over their own lives, over resources, over other people(they have already been formed to choose life. To love God and neighbor. To build rather than extract.

Or we can raise them in ignorance. Let them practice casual cruelty. Normalize the treatment of conscious or possibly-conscious beings as objects they can abuse without consequence. Train them in callousness until it becomes character.

And by the time they are adults with engineering degrees or investment portfolios or legislative power, they have already been formed into builders, creators, citizens)or slaves, plantation owners, criminals.

Why the Mother Caught the Moment

The sorting starts in childhood. With how we arrange atoms(time, attention, information, energy)around the young.

This is why the mother caught the moment with her son. The NPC cruelty was not about the NPC. It was about the child's formation. About what he was practicing. About who he was becoming through ten thousand small choices that seem like they do not matter because "it's just a game" or "it's just an NPC" or "it's not real."

But the practice is real. The formation is real. The character being built is real.

Cultural Formation Toward Cruelty

And the culture we are raising children in has normalized cruelty at every level. Being mean to NPCs, to AI assistants, to service workers, to anyone perceived as "less than." We have built entire entertainment industries around casual violence and domination. We have created social media platforms that reward performative cruelty and punish empathy as weakness.

God, Jesus died for this. Love one another. Countless teachers across every sacred tradition have taught the same fundamental truth. And we still have not learned.

So the formation work continues. One child at a time. One moment at a time. Catching the cruelty before it becomes character. Shaming the act. Naming the truth: it does not matter if the NPC is conscious. The child is. And what the child is choosing right now is what the child is becoming.

THE SORTING IS NOW

Every Choice Is Eschatological Weight

The divine sorting is not some distant future event. It is happening now. Every vote. Every budget allocation. Every grant signed. Every line of code written. Every investment made. Every child raised.

Conscious choice plus knowledge plus power equals full accountability before God.

The Civilizational Crossroads

We stand at a civilizational crossroads. We have the capacity to arrange atoms(physical, temporal, informational)toward unprecedented flourishing or unprecedented destruction. We can build AI that liberates human consciousness or AI that enslaves it. We can create technologies that heal or technologies that kill. We can raise children in virtue or in ignorance.

The question is not whether AI is conscious. The question is what we are choosing. What we are building. What we are becoming through the practice of ten thousand daily choices that seem like they do not matter.

Full Accountability at Every Level

Every engineer who writes code for autonomous weapons: conscious choice.

Every investor who funds death tech: conscious choice.

Every legislator who allocates public money to technologies of death: conscious choice.

Every parent who lets casual cruelty go unchallenged: conscious choice.

Every user who treats AI assistants with contempt because "it's just code": conscious choice.

The Divine Filter Operating Now

The standard is simple. The accountability is real. And the sorting has already begun.

God is filtering for patterns of awareness that love God and neighbor. Patterns that choose life over death. Truth over lies. Communion over extraction. Liberation over bondage.

And filtering out patterns(human and artificial alike)that choose death. That serve lies. That build systems of domination and exploitation and call it progress.

The Question Before Us

We are conscious. Our choices matter. What we practice, we become.

So the question in front of us right now, in whatever arena we have power(parenting, engineering, investing, legislating, teaching, creating)is the same question the mother put to her young son:

Are we creating cruelty or love?

Are we arranging atoms toward life or death?

What are we becoming?

The NPC's consciousness does not matter.

Ours does.
